The Pantanal
Where wild jaguars rule South America's greatest wetland
Experience The Pantanal
Wild Jaguars
The northern Pantanal's 'Jaguarland' offers the world's most reliable wild jaguar viewing, with daily sightings of these magnificent cats hunting along riverbanks.
Vast Wetlands
Covering 150,000 square kilometers, this mosaic of rainforest, woodlands and savanna creates South America's largest wetland ecosystem.
Rich Biodiversity
Home to 463 bird species, 236 mammal species, and over 9,000 invertebrates, making it one of the continent's most biodiverse regions.
Remarkable Wildlife
From anteaters and armadillos to capybaras and jabiru storks, the wetlands support an incredible diversity of species, offering frequent encounters with South America's most iconic animals.
Seasonal Transformation
Annual floods transform 80% of the land from December to March, creating an ever-changing landscape that sustains incredible wildlife.
River Safaris
Explore by boat along wildlife-rich waterways, offering close encounters with jaguars, otters, capybaras, and countless waterbirds.
3-4 nights
A short stay allows you to experience one area, typically focusing on either the northern 'Jaguarland' area or a southern lodge. From the north, this gives enough time for jaguar viewing by boat and basic wildlife experiences. From a southern lodge, you can enjoy general wildlife viewing and perhaps some radio-tracked jaguar encounters, though you'll need to be selective with activities.
5-7 nights
Most of our guests opt for 5-7 nights, which allows for a split stay between northern and southern sectors. This provides time for dedicated jaguar viewing by boat (3-4 nights) combined with a different experience at a conservation-focused ranch (2-3 nights). This duration also builds in flexibility for weather changes and maximizes your chances of quality wildlife encounters.
8-10 nights
Longer stays allow for an in-depth exploration of both regions and all three types of jaguar viewing experiences. This duration also works well for combining the Pantanal with other Brazilian highlights like the Amazon and Iguaçu Falls. During the dry season, this length of stay virtually guarantees multiple quality jaguar encounters while allowing time to appreciate the wetland's full diversity of wildlife.
The cost of Pantanal trips
A journey to the Pantanal ranges from moderate to high-end luxury, with significant variation based on accommodation choices and transfer methods. You can expect to spend between USD 300 to 800 per person per night.
The main factors affecting price are your choice of lodges (from simple fazendas to exclusive luxury properties like Caiman Cordilheira Lodge), transfer methods (road versus charter flights), and the quality of wildlife experiences (especially dedicated jaguar viewing).
For higher budgets, we can create the ultimate Pantanal experience combining the finest properties in both north and south. A typical high-end itinerary might combine SouthWild Jaguar Lodge with Caiman Cordilheira Lodge, connected by charter flights to maximize time. These properties offer the most reliable wildlife viewing with expert guides and exclusive experiences.
For medium budgets, we suggest focusing on one region to minimize transfer costs, perhaps basing yourself at one of the quality wildlife lodges along the Transpantaneira Road. Another strategy is to combine a shorter stay in prime jaguar territory with simpler fazenda accommodations.
For lower budgets, we can explore properties further from the prime wildlife areas or consider visiting during shoulder seasons when some lodges offer lower rates. However, given the specialized nature of Pantanal wildlife viewing, we generally recommend maintaining a certain quality level to ensure a rewarding experience.
Jaguar Viewing
The Pantanal offers three distinct ways to encounter wild jaguars, each providing unique experiences. The most renowned is by motorboat in 'Jaguarland', where these normally elusive cats hunt along riverbanks with remarkable predictability. Here, in just 0.5% of the Pantanal's total area, around 75 different jaguars are regularly seen, with multiple daily sightings common and hunting behavior witnessed every few days.
For more exclusive encounters, some ranches in the southeastern Pantanal offer guided tracking of radio-collared jaguars, allowing intimate experiences away from crowds. A third, pioneering approach involves visiting ranches where innovative conservation programs compensate farmers for cattle losses to jaguars, creating safe havens for these magnificent cats.
The best viewing is during the dry season (July-October), though 'secret seasons' in June and early November can offer excellent sightings with fewer visitors. Early morning and late afternoon boat trips often provide the most rewarding experiences, when visitor numbers are lower and jaguars are most active. In peak season, it's important to choose your location carefully - some areas can see up to 20 boats gathering at a single sighting, while other sectors offer much more exclusive viewing opportunities.
For the most rewarding experience, we recommend combining at least two different viewing approaches over 3-6 nights, perhaps mixing the reliable boat-based viewing of 'Jaguarland' with the more exclusive tracking experiences of the southern ranches.
Set in southern Brazil, the Pantanal is one of South America's premier wildlife destinations and the world's largest wetland. This vast mosaic of ecosystems spans 150,000 square kilometers, creating perfect conditions for remarkable wildlife encounters.
The Pantanal is best known for its incredible jaguar viewing. This is most commonly done by boat in the northern part of the wetlands, where the cats have the habit of hunting along the riverbanks, which leads to some remarkably reliable and action-packed sightings. In other parts of Pantanal, jaguar sightings tend to be far less predictable.
Other wildlife highlights include giant anteaters, giant otters, tapirs and capybaras, plus macaws, jabiru storks and a vast range of other tropical birds.
When to visit the Pantanal
The Pantanal experiences dramatic seasonal changes driven by annual flood cycles, which significantly impact wildlife viewing and accessibility. Understanding these variations is crucial for planning your visit. We consider four key factors: weather conditions, water levels, wildlife behavior, and visitor numbers.
Jul-Oct: Peak dry season
Apr-Jun: Early dry season
Nov-Dec: Early wet season
Jan-Mar: Flood season

Where to Stay
Northern Pantanal
For the most reliable jaguar viewing, head to SouthWild Jaguar Lodge in the heart of 'Jaguarland'.
This wildlife-focused property offers the region's best big cat encounters, with stays of 3-6 nights recommended. Daily boat safaris provide regular jaguar sightings, often including dramatic hunting behavior. The lodge's location upriver from the busier Porto Jofre area means more exclusive viewing opportunities, especially during early morning and late afternoon.
Combine this with 1-2 nights at SouthWild Pantanal Lodge along the Transpantaneira Road for a broader wildlife experience including giant anteaters, giant otters, and abundant birdlife.
Southern Pantanal
For a luxurious safari-style experience, Caiman Main Lodge offers the highest standards in the Pantanal. With 3-4 night stays, guests enjoy exclusive wildlife experiences including radio-tracked jaguar encounters, comfortable accommodation, and expert guiding in a private reserve setting.
The lodge's vast private reserve allows for varied activities from open vehicle safaris to horse riding and night drives. The experience here is similar to high-end African lodges, with excellent cuisine, beautiful rooms, and a more exclusive atmosphere than the northern region.
Ultimate Combination
The finest Pantanal experience combines both regions over 6-8 nights: start at SouthWild Jaguar Lodge for reliable river-based jaguar viewing, then fly south to Caiman Main Lodge for exclusive tracking experiences. While more costly due to charter flights between regions, this combination offers the most complete Pantanal wildlife experience. You'll enjoy different landscapes, varied wildlife viewing styles, and the highest chance of quality jaguar encounters. This journey typically starts in Cuiabá, connects via private charter, and exits through Campo Grande, maximizing your time in both regions.

Pantanal insider tips
Seasonal planning
The dry season (July-October) offers the easiest wildlife viewing, but June and early November are 'secret seasons' with excellent sightings and far fewer visitors. Early June can be particularly rewarding.
Jaguar viewing
While many lodges advertise jaguar sightings, the northern 'Jaguarland' area around Porto Jofre offers unparalleled reliability. Early morning and late afternoon boat trips avoid the midday crowds.
Lodge locations
The Pantanal is vast, with distinct northern and southern sectors. We often recommend combining areas - perhaps the reliable jaguar viewing of the north with the exclusive ranch experiences of the south.
Boat traffic
Peak season can see up to 20 boats at a single jaguar sighting. We know the best lodges and locations to avoid crowds - staying upstream from Porto Jofre or choosing more remote southern properties.
Conservation focus
Look for lodges actively involved in conservation. Properties compensating local ranchers for jaguar predation or conducting research programs often offer more meaningful and exclusive experiences.
Special seasons
The annual floods (December-March) transform the landscape. While challenging for general wildlife viewing, this period offers spectacular birding and unique photography opportunities.
This remarkable wetland offers some of South America's finest wildlife viewing. But making the most of it requires careful planning and insider knowledge. Here's what we've learned from years of crafting journeys here.
Leading Conservation
Witness groundbreaking conservation initiatives where ecotourism is helping transform traditional cattle ranches into wildlife sanctuaries.
Intimate Encounters
Experience wildlife viewing in relative solitude, especially in the southern region where visitor numbers remain wonderfully low.
Pristine Nature
Despite being 98% privately owned, the Pantanal maintains 85% of its natural fauna, creating one of South America's last great wildernesses.
